History Of Oldham Scope

Oldham Scope formerly Oldham & District Spastic Society was founded in Oldham by a small group of parents in 1953.

A Mr. Harry Higgins appeared on the scene and decided this was the cause that he had been seeking. Oldham & District Spastic Society was offered two buildings, of which Heathbank was one, owned by Mr. L. H. Brown. It needed many alterations in which the Society could not afford, until Mr. Alfred Hatton sold the building that he had offered and gave the proceeds to the society in which they were able to adapt Heathbank for the use as a Day Centre.

In 1996 was the opening of "Heathside Cottage" giving four adults with cerebral palsy a home within the community.

In 2003 a survey was made that the word "Spastic" was no longer used to define the condition of cerebral palsy and was finally decided that "Oldham Scope" would be more suitable, providing a different, more modern image.

With the help from donations we can make lives better for our service users, parents and carers

The emblem of Heathbank is a hand supporting a frail flower.
The hand is a symbol of the love and individual care each member of this special community receives.
